The US has announced a sweeping new set of tariffs, ranging from 10% to 41%, on imports from 69 countries.

Key points:

The average effective tariff rate on US goods imports will rise from 2% last year to 16-19%, well above what the market and US central bank had expected at the beginning of the year.
We think this will raise US inflation this autumn, weakening economic growth.
Higher inflation is one reason why we favour shorter-dated US government bonds, which are less sensitive to inflation than longer-dated bonds.
We don’t expect a US recession, so we don’t want to bet against US stocks by going underweight in them.
