Article last updated 30 September 2026.

The challenges facing charities today are more complex than ever.

Economic uncertainty, geopolitical disruption and shifting market conditions are placing pressure on income and long-term planning. At the same time, rapid technological change and increasing scrutiny around governance and responsible investment are reshaping expectations of trustees and leadership teams.

The Rathbones Charities Conference 2026: Future Resilience brought together senior charity leaders, trustees and investment decision-makers to explore what this means in practice and how organisations can respond.

A key takeaway from the day was that future resilience is about more than managing risk. It is about building organisations that can adapt, evolve and make confident decisions over the long term.

The conference themes included:

  • The future operating environment: Market, geopolitical and technological trends shaping charities
  • Trusteeship for the next decade: Governance, leadership and board effectiveness
  • Building resilient investment strategies: Balancing income, growth, liquidity and values
  • Responsible investment in practice: Stewardship and engagement beyond policy
  • Decision-making under uncertainty: Insights from data, behavioural science and  AI

Summaries, key takeaways and recordings of the discussions will be available to watch online in due course.

What does 'future resilience' mean to your charity?

We asked delegates at the Rathbones Charity Conference 2026 what 'future Resilience' meant to their charities.

The responses highlighted a range of perspectives, but above all, a common theme emerged: resilience is not about predicting the future. It's about building the confidence, capability and flexibility to respond to whatever comes next.

Aligning responsible investment with purpose and mission

A strong responsible investment framework for charities balances mission, risk and return. It goes beyond simple exclusions, using Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) integration, stewardship and clear prioritisation to align investments with purpose. The most effective approaches are evidence-based, proportionate and transparent, helping trustees demonstrate progress while maintaining long-term financial outcomes.

The real-world costs of the cloud: fact and fiction

AI and data centres are often blamed for rising energy and water use, but their overall impact is relatively small compared to sectors like agriculture. While concerns are valid, the issue is broader, and tech companies are taking steps to improve efficiency and reduce their environmental impact.
